The Hornets played another pre-season game last night. I didn't get to watch this one, but the box score waved all kinds of red flags at me: Mo Pete still can't shoot, they only had 96 posessions, so hadn't pushed the pace, Peja didn't play, etc.
The adage is "The Preseason Doesn't Matter", but I can tell you, if you're writing a blog and pouring over Pre-season games so you can talk about them - they start to matter. And man, some of this stuff was giving me heartburn. Okay, it wasn't literal heartburn, but it was still bugging me so I decided to do some research.
I was just a fan last year, not a highly dedicated Unofficial Blogger with apparently too much time on his hands. I remember being aware the Hornets weren't doing so well in the pre-season, but I had applied the "it's just preseason" adage and ignored them. Looking at those games, I'm happy I did. Last year the Hornets went 2-5 in the preaseason, their starters shot under 40%, Peja missed 2 games, Tyson 2, West 1. Chris Paul barely averaged 6 assists. Linton Johnson tied for the lead in minutes at 26 a game. Some dudes named Scooter McFadgon and Luis Flores played 80+ minutes together.
What did their poor performance mean? Nothing, of course. The Hornets roared out of the gate with a 4-0 and then 8-3 record until Peja's back turned into an accordion and the rest of the team wanted to wear cool suits on the sidelines like him.
What's more, in last year's preseason Dallas went 3-5, San Antonio 2-3, and Phoenix 2-4.
So I think I'll skip the bullets evaluating this game and go make lunch or something.
