Fringe Players, baby!

The Hornets announced today the last additions to their official training camp roster, which opens tomorrow. With the additions of Ryan Bowen, Trey Johnson, and Anthony Richardson to Marcus Vinicius and Adam Haluska, we now have five players attempting to fill four spots at the end of the bench.

Right now, I'm giving the edge to Haluska, Johnson and Richardson - because they would all be rookies. And from watching those "Real Training Camp" shows on NBA TV, we know Byron and many veterans love them some rooks. The more rooks you have, the more opportunities you have to make someone sing for you, carry bags, and serve as a target for malicious pranks. Who wouldn't like to go around saying "Carry my bags, rook." "Fetch my socks, rook." "Fend off that groupie without sleeping with her, rook."

In all seriousness I'd probably have to give Haluska and Richardson the edge, with Vinicius sliding in. As I've mentioned so many times before, Byron likes Haluska and his effort, so he'll probably stick. Richardson played pretty well in the Summer League, and we need another 6-9 skinny forward to fill the locker left behind by the recently departed Cedric Simmons.(That sounds like he died. Of course, he did go to Cleveland, so . . .)

Vinicius has already received the "kiss of death" when his aggressiveness was questioned by Byron at Summer League, so I'm guessing he's probably going to be out some time this year. But for now, because he does have a fully guaranteed contract, he'll probably start the season a Hornet.

So that leaves two guys fighting over the last spot. Trey Johnson is intriguing. He was dynamite in college, and can obviously score - but every year the Hornets seem to bring in one high-scoring college guard and they never stick. I'd like to see him stick, partly because having him will stop the Hornets from signing Ryan Bowen. Bowen has experience in the NBA, but I can't look at his production for the minutes he's played in the past and do anything except cringe. His numbers project to 7.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in a starters 36 minutes. It's possible he can defend, but he can't do anything else, that's for sure - he didn't even produce in Europe. So using the power of positive thinking - I say Trey Johnson will get that last slot!

The season is almost here!

If only I had a dollar for every time I'd had someone tell me "Fend off that groupie without sleeping with her, rook." I'd have enough to SuperSize my meal, that's for sure!
