Well, today the Hornets traded away last years #15 pick Cedric Simmons for . . . David Wesley's non-guaranteed contract. Essentially, it's trading a young developing(maybe) big man for some really minor cap relief(1.6 million). I can't think of any reason they would do this unless they were clearing room to sign someone else in training camp, clearing room for a trade, or Simmons had been caught taking pictures of Byron Scott and Jeff Bower shaving and shining each other's heads with baby oil.
In any case, I would like to think they'd have been able to get something more for Simmons than that. Guys with his athleticism and height don't grown on trees. It is important to remember that Simmons was the back-up to the back-up, and possibly with Ely around, you could add another back-up to that, so trading him away has no real impact on the team.
If no acquisition goes down after this, some random big is bound to stick in training camp. The standard is to have 5 bigs on hand for a team, and with this trade, they are down to two. Maybe Anthony Richardson or Jackson Vroman, both of whom played fairly well in summer league for the team, will get a shot at that last spot. And hey, according to the salary rules, most of the contracts of players being signed to the minimum is picked up by the League, not the team doing the signing. So replacing Simmons will probably be close to free.
